TOKYO, January 12, 2026 – Her Excellency Ambassador Maria Terezinha da Silva Viegas, accompanied by officials of the Embassy of Timor-Leste in Tokyo, received a courtesy visit from the Minister of Public Works, H.E. Mr. Samuel Marçal, and his delegation.

Collaboration with JICA on Flood Management
The Minister’s visit to Japan was conducted at the invitation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The delegation is participating in a high-level capacity-building program focused on disaster risk reduction, with a specific emphasis on advanced flood management strategies.

Strengthening Disaster Mitigation Strategies
The meeting at the Embassy provided a strategic platform to discuss the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in infrastructure resilience. Both parties emphasized the importance of exchanging technical expertise in disaster mitigation, which remains a key pillar of Timor-Leste’s sustainable development agenda.
This engagement reinforces the strong partnership between Timor-Leste and Japan in developing human resources and technical capabilities to address climate-related challenges and ensure national safety.
