Tokyo, 24 October 2025. H.E. Madam Ambassador Viegas, accompanied by Counsellor Celio da Silva, paid a courtesy visit to the Ambassador of Malaysia to Japan at the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo.
Warm Reception and ASEAN-Related Discussions
Upon arrival, Ambassador Viegas was warmly received by H.E. Dato’ Sharil Effendy Abd Ghany, Ambassador of Malaysia to Japan. During the meeting, Ambassador Dato’ Sharil conveyed his congratulations to Timor-Leste on its forthcoming admission as the newest member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which was scheduled to be officially announced on 26 October 2025 in Kuala Lumpur.
The discussion reflected the positive and cordial relations between Timor-Leste and Malaysia, as well as Malaysia’s supportive role in Timor-Leste’s ASEAN accession process.
Invitation to ASEAN Commemorative Event in Tokyo
In response, Ambassador Viegas expressed her appreciation for the warm welcome and the constructive exchange of views. She formally invited Ambassador Dato’ Sharil to attend the commemorative reception celebrating Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN, to be held on 27 October 2025 in Tokyo.
Ambassador Viegas also requested that Ambassador Dato’ Sharil deliver a welcoming address on behalf of ASEAN at the event, in line with Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair. The event was intended to mark Timor-Leste’s entry as the 11th member of ASEAN and to highlight shared commitments to regional cooperation and unity.
Reaffirming Bilateral and Regional Cooperation
The courtesy visit reaffirmed the close bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Malaysia and underscored their mutual commitment to strengthening cooperation within the ASEAN framework and promoting regional stability and solidarity.
