Tokyo, 11 October 2025. H.E. Mrs. Maria Terezinha da Silva Viegas, Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to Japan, arrived in Tokyo on 11 October 2025 and was received at Narita International Airport.
Ambassador Viegas succeeds H.E. Mr. Ilídio da Costa Ximenes, who previously served as Ambassador of Timor-Leste to Japan. Her appointment marks a historic milestone, as she is the first female Ambassador of Timor-Leste entrusted by the Government of Timor-Leste to serve in Japan.
Warm Welcome by Embassy and Diplomatic Representatives
Upon her arrival, Ambassador Viegas was warmly welcomed by officials and staff of the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Japan. She was also received by Mr. Kitahara, former Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste and current Honorary Consul of Timor-Leste in Japan.
Historic Appointment and New Diplomatic Chapter
The arrival of Ambassador Viegas represents a new chapter in Timor-Leste’s diplomatic engagement with Japan and reflects the Government’s continued commitment to promoting inclusive leadership and strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
