A comprehensive guide for Timorese nationals (RDTL) on preparation, entry, and residency in Japan.

1. Japanese Visa Application

The Embassy of Timor-Leste in Tokyo does not process Japanese visa applications. All entry permits must be obtained prior to departure.

  • Where to apply: Visit the Embassy of Japan in Dili.
  • Work & Study: Ensure you have received your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from your sponsor in Japan before applying for your visa.
  • Travel Purpose: Have clear documentation regarding your stay (Employment contract, University admission, or Guarantee letter).

2. Essential Documents Checklist

Before leaving Timor-Leste, verify that you have the following original documents in your possession:

  • Passport: Valid for at least six (6) months beyond your intended stay.
  • Medical Insurance: Highly recommended to cover potential health costs in Japan.
  • Identity Documents: Carry copies of your BI (Bilhete de Identidade) and Birth Certificate.
  • Emergency Contacts: Keep a written copy of the Embassy's contact details and your sponsor's information.

3. Arrival & Consular Registration

To ensure your protection and access to consular services, all Timorese nationals must register with the Embassy in Tokyo.

  • Zairyu Card: Upon arrival (for long-term stays), you will receive a Residence Card. It is legally required to carry this card at all times.
  • Lapor Diri (Registration): Notify the Embassy of your address and contact number within the first week of your arrival.
