YAMAGUCHI, 27 November 2025 — H.E. Maria Terezinha da Silva Viegas, Ambassador-Designate of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to Japan, conducted an official visit to Yamaguchi Prefecture in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Timor-Leste’s Proclamation of Independence. Upon arrival at Yamaguchi-Ube Airport on 26 November, she was welcomed by Mr. Octoviano Viegas Tilman, Vice President of the Timorese Students’ Association in Japan (AETJ).

On 27 November, Ambassador-Designate Viegas paid a courtesy call on Mr. Keiji Shinozaki, Mayor of Ube City. She expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the Government of Timor-Leste for the city’s ongoing hospitality and support for Timorese students, ensuring a conducive environment for their academic and daily activities.

Strengthening Academic Ties at Yamaguchi University
The visit continued with a meeting with Ms. Yuri Ishii, Vice President of Yamaguchi University. Ambassador-Designate Viegas commended the university for its dedication to Timorese scholars and emphasized the importance of cross-cultural adaptation. She encouraged continued mentorship and expressed her intention to further enhance educational collaboration through future visits.

The day concluded with a cordial dinner hosted by the Timorese student community in Yamaguchi, reinforcing the strong ties between Timor-Leste, the local authorities, and the academic community.
