Tokyo, 27 October 2025. The Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Tokyo hosted a diplomatic reception at the Metropolitan Hotel Tokyo to mark Timor-Leste’s admission as the 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The event highlighted a historic milestone in Timor-Leste’s regional integration and growing engagement within Southeast Asia.
Strengthening Timor-Leste’s Role in ASEAN and Regional Cooperation
The reception brought together representatives of all ten ASEAN member states, ASEAN dialogue partners, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, G7+ countries, member states of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), civil society organizations, private sector representatives, and Timorese students residing in Japan.
Their presence reflected broad regional and international support for Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN and underscored the country’s increasing role in promoting regional stability and cooperation.
Key Remarks by ASEAN and Japanese Representatives
The program opened with welcoming remarks by H.E. Madam Ambassador Viegas, followed by a message from the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. A keynote address was delivered by H.E. Dato’ Sharil Effendy Abd Ghany, Ambassador of Malaysia to Japan, representing the Government of Malaysia in its capacity as ASEAN Chair for 2025.
Ambassador Dato’ Sharil Effendy congratulated Timor-Leste on its historic achievement and encouraged active participation in ASEAN-related initiatives, particularly within the ASEAN Community in Tokyo, emphasizing collaboration and shared responsibility.
Japan’s Continued Support for Timor-Leste’s ASEAN Journey
General Nakatani, serving as Guest of Honor, extended his congratulations to Timor-Leste and acknowledged the country’s perseverance over nearly a decade in pursuing ASEAN membership. He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Timor-Leste as it embarks on this new chapter, expressing optimism for enhanced cooperation within the ASEAN framework.
Remarks were also delivered by Mr. Hirabayashi Kunihiko, Secretary-General of the Japan–ASEAN Center, and representatives from ASEAN member states, further highlighting Japan–ASEAN–Timor-Leste cooperation.
Symbolic Ceremony and Cultural Presentation
A ceremonial cake-cutting led by Ambassador Viegas and General Nakatani symbolized Timor-Leste’s formal entry into the ASEAN family. The event also featured a short cultural video showcasing Timorese singers with the subtitle “Together We Rise,” reflecting unity, resilience, and shared aspirations within ASEAN.
The reception concluded with a group photo session involving Ambassador Viegas, ASEAN ambassadors, and invited guests.
