From Resistance to Restoration
Timor-Leste's story is one of the most remarkable nation-building journeys of the 21st century. After centuries under Portuguese administration and 24 years of occupation, the Timorese people secured their independence through a UN-supervised popular consultation in 1999, formally restoring sovereignty on 20 May 2002. That history of resilience still shapes the nation's identity and its principled voice in regional and global affairs today.
Geographically, Timor-Leste occupies the eastern half of Timor Island at the edge of the Lesser Sunda Islands — from the highlands of sacred Mount Ramelau to the coral reefs of Atauro Island, part of the biologically richest marine region on Earth, the Coral Triangle.
