Tokyo, 12 August 2026 — H.E. Maria Terezinha Viegas, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to Japan, accompanied by Counsellor Célio Moniz, received a courtesy visit from Mr. Tatsuya Hamaguchi, General Manager of the Business Development Department, and Mr. Tomosuke Arikawa of the Supply and Marketing Department of Astomos Energy Corporation.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange information on continued cooperation in the field of education, particularly regarding the 2026 one-year scholarship programme for the next group of 20 students from the National University of Timor Lorosa'e (UNTL).
The meeting also included discussions on a proposed one- to two-week exchange visit to Japan for two UNTL students. The proposed initiative would provide the students with an opportunity to gain new experiences, broaden their academic perspectives, and further engage with Japan's educational and social environment.
The Embassy of Timor-Leste in Japan welcomes initiatives that support the development of Timor-Leste's young generation and expand opportunities for students to gain international experience and build meaningful connections.
The Embassy also expresses its appreciation to Astomos Energy Corporation for its continued interest and support in advancing educational opportunities and people-to-people exchanges between Timor-Leste and Japan.
Educational cooperation and youth development remain important elements in strengthening the longstanding friendship and partnership between Timor-Leste and Japan, while creating broader opportunities for the exchange of knowledge, experience, and mutual understanding between the peoples of both countries.
