The agreement was conveyed by former Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste and current President of Asosiasaun Lorosa’e–Nippon, Iwao Kitahara, following his meeting with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão at the Government Palace in Dili on Thursday, 17 September.
Iwao Kitahara, accompanied by his wife, Yoshiko Kitahara, returned to Timor-Leste and met with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão to discuss the further development of friendship between the two countries and their peoples.
“I am very pleased to return to Timor-Leste and to meet with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. We agreed to further develop the friendship between Timor-Leste and Japan, as well as between the peoples of Timor-Leste and Japan. I believe that when the people, especially young people, are strong, the nation is also strong,” Kitahara said.
Iwao Kitahara, who also serves as Honorary Consul General of Timor-Leste in Japan, said that he would continue to work diligently to contribute to Timor-Leste’s development in the future.
He also expressed confidence that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, Timor-Leste would continue to make further progress.
Iwao Kitahara served as Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste from September 2008. During his tenure in Timor-Leste, he gained valuable experience in bilateral relations, which now serves as an important foundation for further deepening friendship and cooperation between Japan and Timor-Leste.

この合意は、東ティモール駐在の元日本国大使で、現在はロロサエ・ニッポン協会会長を務める北原巌男氏が、9月17日（木）、ディリの政府宮殿でカイ・ララ・シャナナ・グスマン首相と会談した後に明らかにしたものです。
北原巌男氏は、夫人の吉子氏とともに東ティモールを再訪し、シャナナ・グスマン首相と会談しました。会談では、両国および両国国民の間の友好関係をさらに発展させることについて意見を交わしました。
北原氏は、「再び東ティモールを訪れ、シャナナ・グスマン首相とお会いできたことを大変うれしく思います。私たちは、東ティモールと日本、そして両国の国民の間の友好関係をさらに発展させていくことで一致しました。人々、特に若者が強くなれば、国も強くなると信じています」と述べました。
また、東ティモールの在日名誉総領事も務める北原氏は、今後も東ティモールの発展に貢献するため、引き続き尽力していく考えを示しました。
さらに、シャナナ・グスマン首相のリーダーシップの下、東ティモールが今後もさらなる発展を遂げていくことへの確信を示しました。
北原巌男氏は、2008年9月から東ティモール駐在の日本国大使を務めました。東ティモールでの在任期間を通じて、同氏は両国関係について貴重な経験を積み重ねており、それは現在、両国間の友好と協力をさらに深めていくための重要な基盤となっています。
