Tokyo, 23 October 2025. H.E. Madam Ambassador Viegas met with representatives of Nikkei Inc., a globally recognized media organization specializing in Asian economic and political affairs, at the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Tokyo. She was accompanied by Counsellor Celio da Silva and Labour Attaché Mr. João Mendonça.
The Nikkei delegation was represented by Mr. Rinichiro Nagasawa, Executive Producer of Global Events and Conferences, and Mr. Atsushi Kubota, Senior Producer of the Global Events Unit.
Invitation to the Nikkei Future of Asia Forum
The purpose of the visit was to extend an invitation to the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, H.E. Dr. José Ramos-Horta, to participate in the Nikkei Future of Asia Forum, scheduled to be held in June next year. The delegation requested the Embassy to formally convey the invitation to the Presidential Office in Dili.
During the meeting, Mr. Kubota briefed the Embassy on the Nikkei Future of Asia Forum, describing it as a leading international platform that brings together political, economic, and academic leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region to discuss regional developments and Asia’s role in the global context. The forum has been organized annually by Nikkei since 1995 and attracts hundreds of in-person participants, as well as thousands of online viewers from more than 80 countries.

Embassy’s Response and Next Steps
In response, Ambassador Viegas expressed her appreciation for the invitation, noting that it was “a privilege and an honor.” She confirmed that the Embassy would forward the invitation to the Presidential Office in Dili for consideration by His Excellency the President.
The meeting concluded with Mr. Nagasawa and Mr. Kubota indicating their interest in visiting Dili, should circumstances permit, to personally convey the invitation to the President of Timor-Leste.
